Netball BingoAlbury's part-time bowlers saved the club's season with a 15-run win over Lavington on Saturday. Medium pacer Cameron Sloan (0-11 from seven overs) and off-spinner Jerim Hayes (2-22 from five) ended the Panthers' two-month unbeaten streak to leapfrog them back into the top six. 'They were two for 70-odd and I thought we were struggling,' captain Ross Dixon said. 'We were trying to sneak through those overs as pain-free as possible, but they bowled 12 overs and (Lavington) went from needing four an over to six.' Albury went into the match a win out of the top six, but with rain wiping out two games, a loss would have pushed the club to a win and a half out with six rounds left. The Panthers sent the home team in on what ended up being ideal, sunny weather with Albury grinding out 7-166 from its 40 overs as play started 90 minutes later at 1pm. 'That first hour was really tough, I think we were 40-45 off 20 overs,' Dixon recalled. Lavington coach Daryl Tuffey finished with an incredible 1-5 from eight overs, with four maidens. 'He had the ball on a string, three of those runs were wides, so he conceded only two singles, he didn't bowl a bad ball,' Dixon praised. Albury opener Alex Popko produced one of his finest innings to guarantee the bowling attack had a total to defend. Popko is known as one of the association's most aggressive batsmen, but with Tuffey near unplayable, he was forced to hold back and grind his way to 57 from 95 balls. He shared a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket with Mahesh Kodamullage, who played the role of aggressor, slamming an unbeaten 39 from as many deliveries with two boundaries and two sixes. In the continuing absence of older brother and NSW Country rep Ryan (side strain), Nathan Brown finished with 3-34. Tuffey and Matt Sharp compiled 34 for the opening wicket, but that was the club's biggest stand, although Brown (42 from 44 balls) and Sam O'Connor (25) carried the score to 4-115, before the Panthers lost 6-36 to fall for 151. IN OTHER NEWS: Off-spinner Dixon extended his lead in the wicket-takers (32) with 4-45. The ladder is: North Albury 63, Wodonga 51, Belvoir 51, East Albury 51, St Patrick's 48, Albury 45, Lavington 45, Corowa 42, New City 36, Tallangatta 24, Wodonga Raiders 24.
